ハローキティっていう、物語性が少なくてある意味、無色透明なキャラが世界中の子どもから大人の女性たちに至るまで何故ウケるのか？に関しては、当のサンリオの人でさえも明らかにしてくれない。とい当人にとってもかわからないというのが本音だろう、と書いてある。

ジェンダー理論を持ちだしてみたり、マーケティングの4Pを持ってしてもわからない。果ては複雑系理論まで例にあげているが、それでもこんなシンプルなファッション・アイコンがなぜ売れるのか？わからない。
